Match Preview |
Manchester United takes on Chelsea in a rescheduled Premier League match on Thursday night at Old Trafford. There are four games left in what has been a forgettable season for the Red Devils despite the promise of last year's second-place finish. While the campaign is far from over, Ralf Rangnick's men are probably out of the top-4 competition at this point, and are not guaranteed a spot in the top-6 or top-7 either. The Old Trafford outfit will approach the upcoming encounter on the back of a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Arsenal over the weekend. As it has been the case for the side for the most part of this season, things barely went the way of the 20-time league champions who saw Bruno Fernandes miss a spot-kick while they chased a crucial equaliser. In the end, goals by Nuno Tavares, Bukayo Saka and Granit Xhaka proved enough for the Gunners as Cristiano Ronaldo grabbed a consolation goal for the visitors. In the clash with Chelsea, Manchester United have a long injury list to contend with with their hopes of a top-four finish hanging on a thin thread. However, the personnel available could be motivated by the fact that they not lost a single Premier League game against the Blues in the last eight meetings between them. For Thomas Tuchel's side, the mandate will be to secure a favourable result as they aim to consolidate their place among the top-four. It has been a topsy-turvy ride for last season's Champions League winners and they will be eager to finish on a high. The Stamford Bridge outfit are in contention for the FA Cup and will face-off with Liverpool on May 14. Winning the title and finishing in third place could pass as an 'okay' season for them although things could equally take a wrong turn. The Londonders survived a tough contest with local rivals West Ham and secured a late 1-0 win when they met over the weekend. It took a last-gasp winner by Christian Pulisic to hand them the three maximum points after Jorginho had missed a very important spot-kick in the late minutes of the encounter. Unlike United, their form in the last few games have been commendable, with all but one of their last five outings resulting in wins. Having failed to manage a league win against the Red Devils in close to four years, Thomas Tuchel's men will look to worse the plight of the hosts on Thursday. Victory should be enough to guarantee them a place in Europe for next season. |
